Lay Khoon is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow leading the laboratory unit of the Retinal Disease and Rescue Group, headed by Professor Matthew Simunovic, at the Save Sight Institute, University of Sydney. She completed her PhD at Molecular Immunopathology unit led by Emeritus Professor Nicholas Hunt at the University of Sydney, with a focus on studying long-term neurological sequelae in experimental pneumococcal meningitis. Her current research explores innovative optogenetic gene- and cell-based therapeutic approaches to restore vision loss caused by retinal degenerative diseases.
